'Once upon a time there were three little kittens, and their names were - Mittens, Tom Kitten, and Moppet'. One day their mother, Mrs Tabitha Twitchit expected friends to tea - and so began The Tale of Tom Kitten.
The real-life kittens would romp through the gardens of Hill Top farm and jump up to the wall overlooking the village of Sawrey. One in particular was "... very pretty and a most fearful pickle" and inspired Beatrix Potter to write her delightful tale of their adventures. In 1907, The Tale of Tom Kitten was published, and Beatrix Potter dedicated this story to "all Pickles - especially those that get upon my garden wall".
